Montana's Changing Climate & You: Protecting Wildlife in a Changing Climate
Speaker: Dr. Molly Cross, Wildlife Conservation Society
Presentation Overview:
Climate change poses a significant challenge to the conservation of fish, wildlife and their habitats. As temperatures warm and precipitation patterns change, species and ecosystems will need to either adapt, move to find optimal conditions, or risk local or global extinction. Managers and conservationists continue to struggle with translating the science on climate change into site specific stragies for action. Dr. Cross will discuss fish and wildlife conservation in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and present several strategies for increasing the chances of conservation success as our climate changes.
Presenter Biography:
Dr. Molly Cross is an ecologist whose research focuses on ecosystem reponses to climate change and biodiversity loss. In January 2007, Dr. Cross joined the Wildlife Conservation Society's North America Program to examine the impacts of climate change on wildlife habitat conservation efforts. The primary goal of the project is to bring together experts in the fields of climate change, ecology, conservation planning and land management to apply a framework for anticipating and responding to the potential impacts of climate change in the Intermountain West of North America. Dr. Cross conducted her Ph.D. research at the University of Califormia-Berkeley on ecosystem responses to climate warming and plant species loss in a sub-alpine meadow in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
